Katie’s Cancer Journey

In February 2020, 10 years old Katie’s life changed forever. She was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a cancer that affects around 2100 people annually in the UK.This less common cancer affects the white blood cells, reducing the body’s immune response. Its determination was done through a series of x-rays, biopsies, and bone marrow tests. The news of such a diagnosis for patients’ families and their loved ones is often devastating, leaving a feeling of impending doom and helplessness and often leading to secondary effects such as depression and anxiety. Other issues such as independence and monetary problems often surface during their ordeal, leaving the loved ones and carers in a greater dilemma and aggravating the already difficult situation.

Katie recalls feeling poorly and her mum feeling concerned. Symptoms range from weight loss, fever, lumps around the body and pain allover. It was at Birmingham Children’s Hospital where Katie was having treatment that she was diagnosed almost one year after her initial symptoms started. The treatment lasted four months and Becky Katie’s mother described her daughter as an immensely brave child. Katie stated she felt fine with chemo and wasn’t bothered about losing her hair. Though the strain often showed in the faces of Katie’s mom and little sister, who themselves put on a brave face to keep up Katie’s spirits.

The treatment ended with a full metabolic response, in other words, her body showing the absence of any detectable cancer. Shortly after, Katie fell ill again, with a CT scan showing she had developed a blood clot. The bad news was given to the family and Katie that the cancer had returned..”
